A Taipei history museum is set to reopen in October as a gallery of diplomatic gifts to Taiwan's leaders past and present.
'Academia Historica' – whose building served as a government office during the period of Japanese occupation – will reopen on October 10, or the National Day of the Republic of China (ROC). The ROC is the official name of Taiwan's government.
A museum official said that the museum's treasures are comparable to those in Taipei's National Palace Museum. She also said that the over 300 gifts spanning five continents symbolize Taiwan's diplomatic relations with the rest of the world.
Items to be exhibited include a tribal horn from former Chad President Francois Tombalbaye given in 1969 to then ROC President Chiang Kai-shek, as well as a commemorative coin from the Holy See given to current President Ma Ying-jeou shortly after his inauguration. The collection will also include Mayan artifacts from several Central American countries given to previous ROC presidents Lee Tung-hui and Chen Shui-bian during their terms. |
