Taiwan plans to take Chiang Kai-shek's name off a memorial hall in central Taipei as part of a campaign to play down the role of the late dictator. That's according to a cabinet spokesman on Tuesday.
The Education Ministry is planning to change the theme of the memorial to focus more on Taiwan's democratic achievements.
The complex opened in 1980 as a tribute to the former Kuomintang leader who lost China to the Communists and then ruled Taiwan from 1949 to 1975.
Plans to change the memorial hall follow moves earlier this month to remove Chiang's statues from military bases, and make them less visible at entrances to government buildings. |
