Legal awareness low among Taiwan Internet users

Downloading music and images is second nature to young people in Taiwan – pretty much everyone does it. But a new survey shows that many of these young internet users are not clear on the legality or safety of the things they download.

A survey released Thursday by the Business Software Alliance's Taiwan branch found that about 80 percent of the respondents had downloaded music for free. About 40 percent said they did not know whether the downloads were legal. And nearly 55 percent said their computers were infected by viruses after a download.

The Business Software Alliance has set up a new Chinese-language web site to teach young people about internet safety and on-line ethics. You can visit the English version at: www.b4usurf.org .
