Defense ministry responds to China peace gesture

Defense Minister Chen Chao-min says he would welcome a reduction in the number of missiles aimed at Taiwan by China. There were reports in local newspapers that Chinese President Hu Jintao had mentioned the possibility in his meeting with the Kuomintang Chairman. Those reports were neither confirmed nor denied by Chen, citing national security reasons.

"This is a display of goodwill from the other side, and we are glad to see it happen, of course. However, we will not let down our guard. Our military defense is essential to our safety and will not be abandoned after one gesture," said Chen.

KMT lawmaker Fu Kun-chi asked Chen whether Taiwan should respond to China's purported missile reduction with a goodwill gesture of its own. Chen replied that future military budget will be adjusted according to conditions at the time.
