US: China could threaten US forces in Asia Pacific

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has warned that China’s military modernization could threaten Washington’s military moves and its assistance to allied countries in the Asia Pacific region.

Gates said at a congressional hearing on Tuesday that China has strengthened its military capabilities, particularly in the areas of cyber warfare, anti-satellite capabilities, submarines and ballistic missiles.

In a prepared note, Gates said China’s military modernization could also pose a threat to US military bases, their sea and air resources and the network to support allies in the area.

The defense secretary said, however, that there has been some progress in military ties between Beijing and Washington. He said that continued military exchanges and strategic talks could help avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.

Gates said that US forces must maintain the ability to persuade and deter while at the same time coping with military challenges from all countries.
