The government on Tuesday confirmed that 376 people were killed while 254 were missing after Typhoon Morakot struck over two weeks ago.
The typhoon lashed Taiwan on the weekend of August 8th, bringing nearly three meters of rain in three days. The rain resulted in mudslides and floods that submerged villages and destroyed over 200 roads and bridges.
The latest figures included 238 confirmed deaths from the worst-hit southern village of Siaolin, that was covered in a 5-story high mudslide which buried many alive. In Siaolin, 186 others still remained unaccounted for. The toll could rise higher as the National Fire Agency listed around 60 bodies and/or body parts yet to be identified.
