A low-budget Taiwanese film won top honors at the Golden Horse Film Awards on Saturday night. The movie "No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti" (or "I Can't Live Without You") was honored as best picture, best original screenplay, and it also won best director for Leon Dai.
Dai gave an emotional acceptance speech following the announcement of his award for best director.
"Thank you to everyone who has either encouraged me or discouraged me over the years," said Dai.
He went on to apologize for not having prepared a speech, then thanked the jury for being bold enough to give him the award."
Dai's movie "No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti," is based on the true story of a diver's fight for custody of his daughter. The win was notable because it was the first Taiwanese movie to win best picture in seven years. It was also shot in black and white and cost only six million Taiwan dollars (less than 190 thousand US dollars).
The film beat more acclaimed rivals, including Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang's film "Face." Tsai has long been a favorite in the Taiwanese art house movie scene.
There were other surprises on Saturday night – including the choice to give the best actor award to two different people. That was the first time an award was shared in the Golden Horse Awards' 46-year history. The two actors to share the top honor were Huang Bo from the Chinese black comedy "Cow" and Hong Kong's Nick Cheung who starred in the action film "The Beast Stalker."
Chinese actress Li Bingbing won best actress for her role in the espionage thriller "The Message." She beat out fellow actress Zhou Xun who was nominated for her role in the same movie. |
