Farmers toilet training pigs to cut pollution

Is your pig housebroken? The pigs in Taiwan are about to be.

Pig farmers said on Monday that they have started to potty train their pigs to keep them from defecating in nearby rivers. The farmers smear special toilets with feces and urine to attract the pigs to defecate there. So far, farmers say, the results have been very encouraging.

The piggy toilet training is in response to a water pollution fee the Environmental Protection Administration will introduce next year. One in five complaints about water pollution is about waste from livestock farms. With the encouraging results, officials plan to encourage more pig breeders to begin potty training. Taiwan has about six million pigs.
