Report: US could sell arms to Taiwan early 2010

US-based Washington Post reported on Sunday that the White House could sell a batch of arms to Taiwan early 2010. It also reported that US President Barack Obama also plans to meet with the Dalai Lama, causing tension between the US and China.
The article said that Obama plans to sell Black Hawk helicopters, anti-missile equipment and possibly also diesel powered submarines to Taiwan. The report went on to say that Obama was the first US president in more than ten years who refused to see the Dalai Lama last year due to pressure from China. However, Obama has made plans with the Tibetan spiritual leader to meet together this month.
The report said that the U.S. is aware that China will respond negatively to the Taiwan arms sales and the meeting with the Dalai Lama. Washington Post said that at least Chinese President Hu Jintao will not attend the nuclear safety summit in April and that China would probably call off on the recently-resumed military exchange. |
