China's trademark review board has found that a major Taiwanese relief organization's trademark has already been falsely registered in China. The review board also found several other major Taiwanese trademarks had already been taken.
The Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation was founded in Taiwan and is now one of the world's largest charity organizations. The trademark review board ruled in January that Tzu Chi is both a trademark and a cross-strait non-profit organization.
A spokesperson for Tzu Chi said Thursday that the organization has been doing relief work in China for many years and is a registered trademark. The spokesperson also said that Tzu Chi will continue to explore how to use its trademark to benefit the world.
Other well-know Taiwanese brands that have had their trademarks falsely registered in China include Taiwan Beer, Chunghwa Telecom and Yungching Real Estate.
Similar cases involving the false registration of Chinese trademarks in Taiwan have also come to light in the past two years.
