Pope Benedict XVI granted a public audience on Wednesday to a well-known husband-and-wife piano duo from Taiwan and Germany. The wife - Lina Yeh from Taiwan - and husband - Rolf-Peter Wille from Germany - met the pope before their first-ever performance at the Vatican later on Wednesday.
The concert was part of the celebrations for the 25th founding anniversary of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers. Yeh and Wille were the first musical duo from Taiwan to perform at the Vatican.
They played classical pieces by Bach, Brahms, Edvard Grieg and Francis Poulenc as well as adapted piano versions of pieces by Taiwanese composer Chen Yang.
Yeh was born in southern Taiwan and was a child prodigy who went to study at the Mozart Academy in Salzburg, Austria. Wille came to Taiwan from Germany at the age of 23 to teach. He later went on to obtain a doctorate in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
The couple has traveled extensively over the past three decades and has won critical acclaim for their performances around the world. |
