Taiwanese people urged to exercise more in New Year

The Ministry of Education encourages adults in Taiwan to make a New Year's resolution to exercise more.

Education Minister Wu Ching-chi urged the Taiwanese public to every day exercise at least 30 minutes, to engage in learning for at least 30 minutes, and to be involved in a good deed.

He coined his campaign as a "331" movement. Wu quoted a 2009 survey conducted by the Sports Affairs Council that only 24.4 percent of Taiwanese adults exercise regularly, compared to Japan's 33.3 percent for men and 27.5 percent for women.

Meanwhile, Vice Education Minister Lin Tsung-ming called for the Taiwanese public to eat a vegetarian diet at least one day a week in an effort to “save Taiwan and the world."

He pointed out that some 36 kilograms of carbon dioxide are emitted from the production of each kilogram of beef. Lin said global warming has continued to worsen and Taiwan has been rated as the seventh most endangered area in the world.
