The Ambassador of Kiribati, Amb.Teekoa Iuta said the relations between Taiwan and Kiribati have been stable and firm adding that the presence of the embassy in Taiwan is a testament to the strength of the existing relations between the two countries.
Kiribati is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Taiwan has helped with the disaster fund when the country is hit by cyclones and supports international forum on climate change held by Kiribati. Paris Agreement was reiterated at the COP 22 that coping with climate change has become a priority for all governments.
To protect the environment food security, the 150,000-square-mile Phoenix Islands Protected Area in Kiribati was designated as a UNESCO heritage site and is a fully protected park, making it off limits to fishing.
Swedish Chamber of Commerce Taipei was founded in 2010 in Taipei and the CEO of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Taipei, Louise Bystrom said the aim is to promote commercial and industrial relations between Taiwan and Sweden. The chamber of commerce organizes various activities including Sweden Day and this year it will take place on December 9 at the Huashan Creative Park in Taipei. This allows the public in Taiwan to understand more about Sweden and to have face to face contact with Swedish companies in Taiwan Swedish companies have strong presence in Taiwan.

Dr,Chao Chi-ping, the director of Taiwan Banana Research Institute, has been devoted to the research of bananas for many decades. Dr.Chao Chih-ping has helped many foreign governments in the area of banana disease fighting, management and production. He has helped fight black sigatoka, a leaf spot disease in bananas in Saint Lucia and he said the production of bananas in Saint Lucia today has increased by 40% of the total volume in 2010 when the banana industry was devastated by black sigatoka. Dr.Chao has also been invited by the Australian government to help them fight TR4 Panama disease along with an expert from South Africa

Toastmasters International is an NGO headquartered in the US with the purpose to help its members improve communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Taiwan’s first Toastmaster Club was established in 1958 and the governing body is D67 of Toastmasters International located in Taipei. Trini Ding, the District Director of Taiwan D67 said Toastmasters D67 is a two-day conference that welcomes over 700 Toastmasters and guests to watch the finals where members will compete at the speech contest. Mr.Martin Eberts, Director General, German Institute Taipei said bilateral investment between Taiwan and Germany has intensified over the years and Germany basically has a full scope of bilateral trade with Taiwan adding that Taiwan is a preferred destination for high tech businesses due to the reliability and security of the location.
Germany is a key player in organic food in the world with high quality food without GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism) and Mr.Martin Eberts said the government of Germany senses the same situation in Taiwan and hopes to increase cooperation in the area of organic agriculture. Taiwan’s organic agriculture began rather late in the 1980s but the market for organic food has grown by leaps and bounds due to rising concerns of food security, increasing awareness of health concerns and benefits.
Mr.Martin Eberts, the Director General of the German Institute Taipei, said the election in Germany ended peacefully and he was not surprised at the results.
The German representative in Taiwan said the political situation in Germany has changed and it is a normal process in a democracy so there is no need for any worries that a new party, AfD, the right-wing party will join the parliament. The government will continue to address the economic and security issues and fulfills its obligation to implement the climate change policy. Terrorism is EU’s citizens fastest growing concern and Germany will work with other countries in the world to combat terrorism.
Collaboration with Taiwan will increase with the focus on the energy sector that was introduced a couple years ago, Mr.Martin Eberts added. The focus of the cooperation will be on renewable energy and energy transition both on the regulations and laws as well as the technical side especially in the field of off-shore wind energy adding that Germany could share with Taiwan the experience of energy transition.
The representative of Mozambique Investment Promotion Center (MIPC), Mr.Achilles Yeh brought four musicians from Mozambique to perform at the Taichung Jazz Festival in Central Taiwan which runs from Oct 7th to 15th.
Taichung Jazz Festival is an international festival with musicians from USA, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Israel and Mozambique.

In our last week’s edition, the ambassador of Saint Lucia, Ambassador Hubert Emmanuel talked about the ICT cooperation between Taiwan and Saint Lucia and how he hopes to promote tourism.
In this edition, the ambassador of Saint Lucia, Ambassador Hubert Emmanuel said education and health sectors are important to Saint Lucia adding that health services in Taiwan are second to none in the world as he has lived in the US and the UK before. He said many students from Saint Lucia major in various disciplines in Taiwan including health services, engineering and agriculture. He believes these students will make a difference in the future when they return to Saint Lucia. The ambassador’s daughter came to Taiwan to study even before he was posted in Taiwan in 2015 as she was fascinated by things in Taiwan. She turned down the offer by the University of the West Indies and came to study in Taiwan instead.
During his tenure in Taiwan, the ambassador hopes to push for business development and through business partnership and investment, the ties between Taiwan and Saint Lucia can be further cemented as it will create jobs in the country. He said there will joint-venture in agro-processing and other types of business investment. Taiwanese are good at manufacturing and they can come to Saint Lucia to do light manufacturing business. Goods assembled and manufactured in Saint Lucia can be exported to all the Caribbean countries enjoying duty free qualifications.More
In last week’s edition, the ambassador of Saint Lucia, Ambassador Hubert Emmanuel said agriculture is an important industry for Saint Lucia as tourism sector in Saint Lucia has been growing. Saint Lucia is self-sufficient in the production of many fruits and vegetables.
Ambassador Hubert Emmanuel said Taiwan Technical Mission has been working with the government of Saint Lucia to revolutionize ICT sector in Saint Lucia. ICT center was established and e-government system has been implemented including the police force and the health system. The project that will be completed by the end of 2018 is a GINet (Government Island-wide Network) which is another cooperative project between Taiwan and Saint Lucia allowing Wi-Fi connectivity across the island.
The economy of Saint Lucia depends on tourism and attracts around 350 thousand tourists every year. Ambassador Hubert Emmanuel said he hopes more Taiwanese will visit his beautiful country in the future and his government hopes to promote a package of tourism which includes some other famous resorts in the Bahamas and Barbados.More

Saint Lucia is not only self-sufficient in the production of many fruits and vegetables but exports them to other countries as well. Since 2010, the banana industry has been threatened by black sigatoka, a leaf-spot disease of bananas, and Taiwan has been helping the farmers fight black sigatoka in Saint Lucia, thereby guiding farmers in implementing disease control measures and restoring capacity back to the banana industry in Saint Lucia.
