President Tsai Ing-wen has called on visiting members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to give their support to a Taiwan-EU investment agreement.

Tsai met with the visiting delegation on Thursday. She told the MEPs that the EU is Taiwan’s fifth largest trade partner and that EU companies are Taiwan’s largest source of foreign investment. She said that a recent EU Parliament resolution on trade relations with Taiwan sets down the basis of support for the investment pact. The president urged the visiting MEPs to call for an early start to negotiations.

Tsai also said Taiwan hopes to become an indispensable partner for the international community through participation in international organizations. She said Taiwan hopes to contribute more in areas such as tackling climate change, overseas aid, countering terrorism, and fighting trans-national crime.
