The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) set up a new southern Taiwan office in Kaohsiung on Friday. The day marked the 40th anniversary of the national economic think tank.
TIER head Jeff Lin said the new office marks an important milestone in the institute’s forty-year history. Lin said the goal is to integrate local research and economic prowess in order to help promote the New Southbound policy. The policy seeks to build closer economic ties with countries in Southeast Asia, as well as India, Australia and New Zealand.
Officials at TIER said the institution wants to contribute in many aspects of the policy’s implementation. The tasks will include directly taking part in discussions with local governments, providing information to policy makers and communicating with the public.
