President Tsai Ing-wen has told a visiting member of the European Parliament that Taiwan is a reliable partner for the international community. Tsai was speaking Friday with Anna Fotyga, chair of the European Parliament Security and Defence Subcommittee.
\The president thanked the European Union for its longstanding support of Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. She said China’s political interference cannot prevent Taiwan from wanting to make a contribution in international affairs. This includes in the areas of health, climate change, humanitarian aid, anti-terror cooperation and the fight against transnational crime.
Tsai also said she believes there exists great potential for further cooperation between Taiwan and the European Union. She cited the government’s plans to invest in areas including the Internet of Things, biomedicine, green energy tech, smart devices, the defense industry and innovative agriculture, among others.
Fotyga’s delegation is visiting Taiwan from Friday until Monday. The foreign ministry said the delegation’s purpose is to understand more about Taiwan’s foreign policy and the state of cross-strait affairs.
