Tiananmen activist Wang Dan said Wednesday that China is using the case of Taiwanese human rights activist Lee Ming-che as a warning to NGOs. Lee was detained in March and pleaded guilty to “subversion of state power” this week during a court appearance in China's Hunan Province.
Lee had shared information about Taiwan’s democratic development and human rights issues with Chinese friends through China on Wechat and other platforms. This was deemed as his subversive behavior.
Spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office An Fengshan said Wednesday that Lee’s case was handled in accordance with the law.
Wang Dan said that China has been aggressively trying to control civil society in the past few years. He said it wants to prevent foreign NGO influence and that its crackdown is becoming more systematic.
