President Tsai Ing-wen says ties between Taiwan and Saint Lucia remain friendly. Tsai was speaking Friday at a military ceremony to welcome Prime Minister Allen Chastanet.

Tsai said Saint Lucia is an important ally in the Caribbean and that there is close cooperation between the two sides. Tsai also said both share universal values such as democracy, freedom and human rights.

The president said, "We look forward to our continued cooperation in the future and mutual assistance in the international community, so that we can each be a staunch supporter for each other."

This is Prime Minister Chastanet’s second visit to Taiwan since he took office last June, but he called the trip his "first official visit."

Chastanet said bilateral ties have continued to grow since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 2007. Chastanet also said he hopes to strengthen ties with Taiwan based on the existing cooperation that includes scholarships, regional development, produce farming, aquaculture as well as information and communication technology.
