Premier William Lai said Thursday that the passing of the act promoting transitional justice is a milestone in Taiwan’s democracy.

The Legislature passed the act on Tuesday. The new act allows the Cabinet to set up a nine-person committee nominated by the premier and approved by the Legislature.

Lai said the committee will be responsible for publishing key political documents, removing symbols of authoritarianism, and restore historical truths.

The National Development Council has also set up a special committee to further collect political documents. The committee will comprise 20 scholars who will cover five different areas: government policy, questioning, judicial investigation, foreign affairs and national defense, as well as regional government security.

The National Archive Administration said the committee will carry out detailed research that involves keywords from more than 80 political incidents and 30,000 names, locations, events and subjects.
