The foreign ministers of three of Taiwan’s Latin American diplomatic allies will visit in March. That’s the word from the foreign ministry official in charge of Latin America and Caribbean affairs, Diego Chou, on Thursday. The countries include Guatemala and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The foreign ministry had not released the name of the third country as of broadcast time.
Chou said the visits are an indication that Taiwan hopes to have more senior officials from ally countries interact with their Taiwanese counterparts.
Meanwhile, Chou said Paraguay’s former president Fernando Lugo visited Taiwan from January 6 to 10 and met President Tsai Ing-wen. Chou said Lugo reiterated Paraguay’s support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Chou said Lugo described Taiwan as a sincere friend of Paraguay. The country is Taiwan’s only ally in South America. It was Lugo’s fourth visit to Taiwan, two of which were during his time in office.
