Rescue workers searched for a Canadian married couple in the collapsed Beauty Inn but found them dead on Friday, bringing the death toll to 12. They had earlier detected signs of life in their hotel room but their bodies were found, holding tight to each other, disfigured by the collapsed building. As of Friday, 278 have been confirmed injured and 5 missing.

The five missing are a Chinese family in room 201 of the inn, but there are currently no signs of life. Rescue workers had been trying to rescue victims from those two rooms in the collapsed Yunmen Tsuiti commercial and residential complex in downtown Hualien. The golden 72 hour period for rescue ended on Friday morning.

Hualien County Magistrate Fu Kun-chi said that they would meet with experts to decide if they should keep digging at the complex.

On Friday, work to tear down the Marshal Hotel and the other two collapsed buildings began. Fu said they would check the surrounding buildings to see if any of them are dangerous. If any are deemed dangerous, they will be torn down as well. Fu says there will be much reconstruction to do. The need for permanent housing will be more than the Xiaolin Village that was destroyed by the Typhoon Morakot.
