On this day in 1958, Taiwan saw its lowest ground-level temperatures recorded in the past century, with lows in the Taipei area dipping to as low as 2.6 degrees Celsius. 
On this day in 2004, the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics announced the discovery of the universe's largest known diamond. Astronomers named this star "Lucy" after The Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
On this day in 2011, Taiwan's Yani Tseng took over the No. 1 ranking in women's  golf after winning the Australian Ladies Masters by four strokes.
