Taiwan’s digital minister, Audrey Tang, participated in the UN’s World Urban Forum in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday via video link. Taiwanese officials have not been able to attend UN events in person since 1971 when the United Nations recognized Beijing.
Tang discussed the development of social enterprises in Taiwan. Tang also spoke about the establishment of the Social Innovation Lab in Taipei, a space which provides government services to hundreds of social enterprises and other creative ventures.
Tang said the 17 Sustainable Development Goals put forward by the UN are a vision not just for the world, but also a vision embodied in Taiwanese society. She said the goals have become a way for Taiwan to contribute to the world while strengthening possibilities for international connection.
Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund also took part in the forum and discussed a project to boost tourism in Belize.
