President Tsai Ing-wen has expressed gratitude to the United States for supporting Taiwan on the international stage.

Tsai’s words came on Wednesday during her meeting with James Moriarty, the chair of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). The AIT is the de facto US embassy in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic relations.

Tsai thanked Moriarty for speaking about Taiwan’s democracy during a recent speech at Stanford University. Tsai also thanked the US Department of State for permitting American submarine builders to sell key technologies to Taiwan. Tsai said these moves have consolidated the US friendship with Taiwan and have shown support at a time when Taiwan is under pressure from China.

Moriarty said in response that the United States promises to face future challenges with Taiwan and will do its best to ensure the nation’s peaceful development.
