Weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun will carry the flag for Taiwan at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 19. The head of the Sports Administration, Kao Chun-hsiung, made the announcement on Wednesday.
"We had a discussion about it and [Kuo Hsing-chun] is not in competition on the 20th and can take part in the opening ceremony, and she was also willing. She also is also more of a well-known name at home and abroad, so everyone felt Kuo should be the flag-bearer for the Chinese Taipei team," Kao said.
The team of 290 competitors and coaches will depart for Jakarta on August 15.
Kuo Hsing-chun won bronze in the 58 kilogram class at the Rio Olympics in 2016. She went on to set a clean-and-jerk world record 142 kilos at the Taipei Universiade last year. Kuo is hoping she can win gold for Taiwan and break her own record at the Asian Games.
