Datuk Yong Soo Heong was invited by Taiwan’s foreign ministry in late 2016 to witness what the government has been doing to promote the New Southbound Policy. In January this year, he submitted articles to his former company, Bernama, Malaysian national agency and the Edge Financial Daily, the most prestigious business and investment weekly in Malaysia. In his article, he talked about Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy in the areas of education and investment.
In the area of education, Datuk Yong Soo Heong said apart from Taiwanese government’s decision to increase the quota of scholarships from 20 to 30 Malaysian students, he said the educational institutions and the Taiwanese government should also hold education fairs in ASEAN countries and provide workshops as well as training to local institution to attract more non-ethnic Chinese to pursue higher education in Taiwan. Currently, around 15,000 Malaysian students, mostly Malaysian Chinese, are studying in Taiwan.
