Early each year, the world’s publishers and booksellers gather in Taipei for one of the global book business’ most important events. The Taipei International Book Exhibition is a sprawling fair where publishing agents strike copyright deals, bookshops show off their wares, and Taiwan’s insatiable readers stock their bookshelves for another year. Taiwanese publishers, of course, wouldn’t dream of missing it. But neither would international publishers serious about Asia. What is it that draws so many booksellers and book lovers from around the world here, especially given the big book markets just next door?
