In 1966, at the height of the White Terror era, American missionary Milo Thornberry arrived in Taiwan, then known to Americans as "Free China".
But soon after his arrival, Reverend Thornberry discovered that the country was not free. In order to get to know Taiwan better, Reverend Thornberry began meeting with Taiwanese dissidents, including well-known human rights leader Dr. Peng Ming-min, who was under house arrest for angering the Chiang Kai-shek regime.
In his recently published memoir, Fireproof Moth: A Missionary in Taiwan's White Terror, Reverend Thornberry describes what he saw in Taiwan, and how he secretly helped political dissidents and their families. When convinced that the secret police were going to arrange an "accident" to kill his friend, Dr. Peng Ming-min, Reverend Thornberry decided to smuggle his friend out of the tightly-watched country.
Tune in to Time Traveler on December 14 for Reverend Milo Thornberry's story. |
