In 1949, the Kuomintang, or Chinese Nationalist Party, suffered major defeat at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party, and lost China. Following the defeat, the Nationalist government led by Chiang Kai-shek relocated to Taiwan, and the two sides have been ruled separately since then.
What happened during the years between the end of the Second World War and Chiang's defeat? 89-year-old Kung Hsuan-wu was a young trainee journalist for the Kuomintang-controlled Central Daily News. Although young and not experienced, Kung had the rare opportunity to witness some of the biggest events at the time. He published two memoirs recently to detail what he had seen during some of the defining moments of Chinese history.
Tune in to Time Traveler on July 25 to learn more about the memoir of Kung Hsuan-wu. |
